Purpose of Shotley Parish Council

A Parish Council is the first tier in the local government structure in England; the second is the District Council (Babergh in our case) and the third, the County Council (Suffolk).

Shotley Parish Council has nine members elected every four years, the most recent election was held on 3 May 2007. Being a Parish Councillor is a voluntary position and unlike their counterparts in the District and County they receive no payment. The Council employs a part time Clerk who has responsibility for managing the meetings, dealing with correspondence and over seeing any contracts or purchasing.

A Parish Council has a wide range of powers at their disposal including giving grants to local organisations, promoting tourism, cleaning public places and providing allotments. The most important role is as a statutory consultee on planning matters. The Local Planning Authority has to consult the PC on all Planning Applications within the Parish boundary from the smallest conservatory to the HMS Ganges site, other bodies such as the Primary Care Trust also consult us on local issues.

Parish Councillors

Following the incontested Parish Council election on 3 May 2007, and subsequent changes (outlined below) the new Parish Council is made up as follows:
POlling station, Shotley village hall

The Council Chairman is currently Cllr Richard Wrinch, replacing Cllr Mel Matthews who had served between 17 May and 21 June 2007.

Richard had been the previous Chairman since October 2005, replacing John Mullan, who in turn replaced Clare Sullivan.

The Council would like to thank outgoing councillors Anna Long (after 8 years), Clare Sullivan (16 years) and Brenda Hooper for their service to the residents of Shotley. They didn't stand for re-election in May 2007. Cllr Jeremy Peters resigned in July 2008, and was replaced by the co-option of Graham Brown.
