| Local girl Wendy Sadler has won a prestigious award, to be presented on 4 March 2009. |
Wendy was nominated for the 2009 Babergh Community Achievement Awards (sponsored by Prolog) by Cllr Norman Bugg of Shotley Parish Council. This is what he said: "Wendy moved with her parents to the Queen's Head, Erwarton in 1957. She is married to Don and has three children and four grandchildren. Wendy's mother was churchwarden at St Mary's, Erwarton and Wendy supported her before taking over and retaining the post to the present. Wendy accepted the post of lay elder and after training, was licensed as a lay reader in November 1994. This role enables Wendy to lead and conduct services, including funerals. Wendy, along with a small team of helpers constantly fundraise for Erwarton Church with regular events such as Spud Bashes, Flower Festival, Jumble sales and village BBQs. A monthly soup-a-lunch in Shotley Village Hall raises funds for both Shotley and Erwarton Churches and is attended by 50-60 people. Wendy is a member of the team of workers. She has been involved with the Shotley and Erwarton Women's' Institute for over 50 years and has held every committee post bar treasurer. This involves monthly committee and group meetings plus organising outings and social functions. In 1977 Shotley and Erwarton Jubilee Community Council was formed and Wendy served on the committee from day one until 1996. The committee raised over £60,000 for the new Shotley Village Hall. It met at least monthly and organised many fundraising and social events. From 1996 began an 11 year spell as a Babergh District Councillor for the Berners Ward. She carried out her duties with her usual enthusiasm and diligence, spending many hours on behalf of the two villages and rarely missed a Shotley Parish Council meeting. Wendy did not seek re-election in 2007. I believe I am supported by the vast majority of residents of Shotley and Erwarton in nominating Wendy for this award. Fifty years plus of dedicated service without which the two villages would be much poorer places." |
