After-school youth club closes - as the next phase is planned

Shotley Youth Club would like to thank all of the young people, tutors, youth workers and volunteers for the fantastic, fun filled summer activity programme highlights included the Junk Funk Day, Rock School, a residential camping trip to Thetford Forest and the mobile skate park. Photos coming soon.

The funding for the After School Youth Club, which ran successfully from November 06 to July 07, has come to an end and without money to pay for staff will not be continuing.

However, the next phase is being planned and it is hoped to offer a range of activities. The Club is working with the Parish Plan Board, the Village Hall, the Safe Neighbourhood Team and Babergh Communities Together to get this together.

One idea is that young people aged 17-24 will be trained and supported to plan, organise and run the activities - "Grow Your Own Youth Workers!" The "Youth Club" would become a "Youth Hub" centred on the soon to be refurbished small room in the village hall.

Let us know if you want to get involved. Contact us on the info@myshotley.com address or call 07845 875238 and we will meet up and have a chat.

Meeting to Form Youth Work Group

Right now there is an exciting project that needs committed and enthusiastic people to help make it happen.

Meeting the needs of Shotley's young people was an important recommendation in the Parish Plan. Over the past few months meetings with young people have been held and a project to establish an “After School Club” in Shotley for high school aged students starting in September has been agreed. The project is currently co-ordinated by two or three people operating solely as interested individuals. Whilst it is hoped professional part time youth workers can be employed to deliver the service alongside some local volunteers, "committee people" are also needed as it is a requirement of the funders that a properly constituted body is in place to manage the activities.

What form the Committee should take is the first decision that has to be made.

The Shotley Youth and Community Project was formed about 12 years ago to buy the Ganges Field and establish the community woodland. It also ran the old youth club until the portacabin behind the Village Hall became unsafe to use, since then it has been inactive. However, it still has a constitution and bank accounts and it was always the intention that it should remain dormant until the right project came along. Is this now the time?

If you would like to see improvements in facilities and opportunities for young people locally you are invited to come along to a meeting on Thursday 8 June at 7.30pm in the Large Committee Room at Shotley Village Hall. SYCP is open to all people who live or work in Shotley and the surrounding areas. Please pass this message on to others who may be interested and especially young people.

More information from info@myshotley.com or call 07845 875238.
