Images of Shotley displays

The Viking Forest Project held the fourth ‘Images' exhibition during the weekend of April 22nd/23rd. There were some new faces among the local artists, photographers and craftspeople this year and thank you to all of them for their support and for the donations to our funds from the sale of their work. Thank you to Jill Nunn for lending us photographs of Shotley Walking Club and to two local farmers for the loans of tractors for display.

Encouraging children to be aware of the countryside around them and involving them in the planting of trees is very important to the VFP and so we were delighted to see such an excellent display of entries from pupils of Shotley Primary School and Holbrook High School in the Art competition, ‘Postcard from the Peninsula', the judges noted ‘a vibrancy of colour and a lightness of touch'.

Early risers enjoyed the popular ‘Dawn Chorus' walks, led by Ian Peters and as usual these were followed by a hearty breakfast expertly cooked by David Armes and Jan (soon to be)! Armes These events plus sales of ploughman's lunches, creams teas a raffle and a well attended and lively Saturday evening with ‘Tricks of the Trade' all helped to swell the funds.

Over £600 was raised, towards the futures purchase of more land for the community to plant woods and wild flowers, creating a lasting legacy for our children's children's children!

When the rain came down on Sunday the Morris dancers performed in the hall, which proved to be a great success. Thank you to them and to everyone who helped to make this an enjoyable and successful weekend.

During the weekend of the 22nd & 23rd of April, the Viking Forest Project will be taking over the Village Hall to present our 4th ‘Images’ exhibition of local artist’s work, crafts, music, local history and farming
items - last year the tractors proved a big hit with boys (and girls) of all ages!

The children’s art competition this year is entitled ‘Postcards from the Peninsula’ with no particular theme, just imagination! We were overwhelmed with over 200 entries last year, across several age
categories, they made a stunning display in the hall over the weekend. The ‘Tug of War’ held between local village teams for the first time last year was won by the Shotley Rose pub… so if you think you can get a team together, start training now! During the weekend we are hoping to have a band, possibly brass, and display of Morris dancing. Ploughman’s lunches will be served on both days, with cream teas on the Sunday.

At the crack of dawn, (5am) on both mornings there will be a ‘Dawn Chorus Walk’. Led by Ian Peters, this is a wonderful way to get a little closer to nature and learn about our native birds and wildlife, (however some of us just suffer through because of the Full English Breakfast provided by David Armes when we get back)! Tickets for this need to be booked in advance, £5 – Please call 787630

On Saturday 22nd there will be an evening of guaranteed good music and probably a little fun too… provided by ‘Tricks of the Trade’. A two-course supper is on offer and the tickets will be £7.50 per head (787263 / 788349 to book)

If you have paintings / artwork / photographs of local peninsula or related subjects you would like to offer for display or sale, please contact 787157 or 787242 (we do not charge an entry fee but a 10% donation of sales to the Viking Forest Project’s funds).

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Councillor Dave Wood for the donation of £250 from his ‘Locality Fund’ to enable us to purchase two ‘Brushcutters’, they’ll save a lot of backache!
