This is a very brief summary of the key points from the meeting of Shotley Parish Council, held on 21 August 2008. More details will be in the minutes or by contacting the Clerk: 01473 788248, parishclerk@myshotley.com

  • A 'Pedestrians Crossing' warning sign had been erected (on the day of the meeting!) by Suffolk County Council immediately before East View Terrace after many months of effort by our County Councillor and an interested resident of Shotley. The Clerk was also investigating having the overgrown hedge nearby removed by the “Unpaid Work” team in early September.
  • PC Gary Austin advised there was to be a Safer Neighbourhood Team public meeting on Monday 8 September, 7.30pm at The Shipwreck to discuss any issues residents were concerned about; a Section 59 (for anti-social behaviour on a moped) warning had been issued to a scooter rider recently - the scooter could be seized if the rider is caught committing another offence. The July Police Report showed five reported crimes for the period.
  • Breached Stour Path - a meeting had taken place between Babergh officers and Parish councillors in late July at which some progress was made with a view to securing the long-term future of the path.
  • The Community Warden reported that litter is down generally in the playgrounds and around the burger van and that the tennis courts were cleaned and cleared of all the glass (although they were not too bad) ready for the Summer Activity days
  • A meeting to discuss extra parking at Kingsland PO had taken place between Suffolk County and Babergh officers, the PO owner and Parish Councillors at which various options were discussed to relief the congestion. Ideas and suggestions are very much in their infancy. Consultation with parishioners will take place once these are checked for feasibility and normal planning procedures etc will be adhered to, so … watch this space!
  • A meeting to discuss the HMS Ganges Reserved Matters (404) application had been held in late July between Babergh officers and SPC Councillors to ascertain progress. It was advised that the developers still wished to proceed with this application although it was not their preferred scheme and BDC had requested further information on the back of the IEMA Report - see separate article for fuller information.
  • Planning issues - it was noted that Babergh had approved the application for 69 Great Harlings for the erection of rear conservatory; and had refused permission for annexe accommodation at Cockle Creek Cottage. It was resolved by the Council to support an application by Hill House Farm to convert a barn and outbuildings into six holiday cottages and associated leisure facilities; and oppose an alternative scheme to erect a summer house at Charity Farm Cottages (which it had previously supported).
  • A grant was to be made to the Community First Responder Scheme for Shotley in conjunction with County Cllr D Wood's Locality Budget which would amount to just under £1400 to provide equipment for this valuable voluntary service.
  • An open public consultation meeting was to be held on 4 September, 7.30pm at the Shotley Village Hall (Large Committee Rm) to discuss the Boundary Committee's Draft Proposals for Local Government in Suffolk.
