Police would like to remind residents to be cautious when dealing with unknown callers to your home after a man called at an address in Bramford stating he was from the Gas Board and needed to check the gas meter. The man, who was not in a uniform and did not have identification, called at the address in Leggatt Drive at around 10am this morning, Thursday 1st December and was let into the property. The man left shortly afterwards saying everything was ok. The resident’s gas supplier later confirmed they had not sent anyone to the address. Nothing appears to have been stolen from the address.

A similar incident was also reported to Police at around 11.45am this morning after a man called at an address in Whatfield Road in Elmsett stating he was from the National Grid and needed to check a gas valve. The resident rang his gas supplier who confirmed they were not aware of anyone calling in the area.

The man is described as white, around 20-30 years old, of average height and build, with short blonde/fair curly hair, wearing glasses, he was wearing dark coloured clothing and a black waterproof jacket. He left in a blue coloured small hatchback vehicle, possibly a K registration.

Police would like to remind residents to always ask for identification for company employees calling at your address, ring the company and ask them to confirm the caller is genuine. If in doubt do not let them into you property, make a note of their description and if possible a description and registration of any vehicle they may be in. Always report suspicious callers to police by dialling 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress.

Police warning on vehicle theft.

A number of vehicles have been targeted by thieves in the Babergh District recently and a vast majority of these had been left unlocked and insecure.

Items amounting to hundreds of pounds have been stolen from unlocked cars, ranging from laptops and sat navs to mobile phones and loose change.

Verity Line, Suffolk Police Babergh Crime Reduction Officer said, “It is extremely frustrating that owners of vehicles appear to be forgetting to lock them when they leave them. Suffolk is a safe county, but if you leave your car or van insecure you are inviting criminals to look around.

“If a thief finds an unlocked door or an open window, it’s an easy hit, and if something is on display inside it makes entering the vehicle worthwhile. You might think that leaving a charger or a sat nav cradle won’t make a difference - but those things indicate a mobile phone, an mp3 player or a sat nav could be close by, i.e. in the glove compartment.

Even the smallest of items could make your vehicle vulnerable. If those vehicles had been locked and those items had been placed securely in a boot or glove box, or preferably removed from the vehicle altogether, those owners may not have become victims of crime with all the expense and inconvenience that entails.”

Drivers should ensure their vehicles are locked at all times. Park in a secure garage if available, and if not, a well-lit, area. Use dusk til dawn security lighting, CCTV, alarms and immobilisers to keep your car safe. If you must leave items inside, do not leave them on display and security mark them with a UV pen or SmartWater, or register property including mobile phones and sat navs with the UK property database Immobilise at www.immobilise.com. Always remove chargers and cradles, and wipe the mark left by suckers from the windscreen.

Anyone with any information on vehicle crime, or anyone who sees any suspicious activity around vehicles, should contact Suffolk Police on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Always dial 999 if a crime is in progress.

Appeal following fail-to-stop collision on the A14

Police are appealing for information after a fail-to-stop road traffic collision on the eastbound A14 on the Orwell Bridge around 8.45am this morning, Thursday 8 September.
Officers need to trace the driver of a small white van which was reportedly weaving in and out of traffic. It's thought the van came up against slower moving traffic and had to brake sharply causing a collision behind.
Two vehicles collided - a silver Peugeot 206 and a black Nissan X-Trail - and the Peugeot was heavily damaged. Fortunately the occupants of this vehicle - a woman and her five-year-old daughter -sustained only comparatively minor injuries but both were taken to Ipswich Hospital for assessment.
Police are praising the actions of a quick thinking HGV driver who stopped close to the scene of the collision to slow traffic and shied the crashed cars from further impact until emergency services arrived.
There was significant congestion caused on the A14 as a result of the crash and police need to speak to the driver of the small white van who is described as initially pausing at the scene before making off.

Anyone who saw the incident who has not yet spoken to police or anyone with information about the vehicle or driver involved is asked to call PC John Clarke at the Police Headquarters roads policing unit on 01473 613500.

There have been a number metal thefts in the Babergh area over the past few months.

You may not realise that the old car battery lying in your garden or the leftover lead from mending your roof has of any use to anyone, BUT it is very desirable to thieves. Therefore please remove the temptation away and secure any scrap metal you may have lying about in an outbuilding, garage or shed, or take it to the scrap metal dealer yourself, before someone else takes it for you!

We urge you to make your buildings and premises as secure as possible to keep criminals out. Where possible it is advised to use security lighting to deter thieves. All gates and entrances to premises should be properly secured and locked. CCTV can also deter offenders as well as driveway or ‘beam breaker’ alarms. Valuable property containing metal such as garden benches or ornaments can further be protected by using a property marking solution like SmartWater. Items can also be registered with the UK property database Immobilise at www.immobilise.com so it can be identified if it’s recovered by us.

We would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity, or may have information about any of these thefts. Call 01473 613500 now.

Digital Switch Over Help Scheme

Residents in Suffolk are being urged to be vigilant against distraction burglars offering to help equip them for the ‘digital TV takeover’.

Wednesday the 6 July was digital switch over day for many parts of Suffolk, with the final phase of the switch over for the area on 9 Nov 2011.

The Safe and Sound group in Suffolk, which includes partners such as Suffolk Constabulary and Suffolk Trading Standards, are warning people not to fall victim to distraction burglars or rogue traders who could use the switchover to digital TV as a means of gaining access to people’s homes.

A Digital Help Scheme has been set up for those who need the most assistance to switch to digital including those aged 75 and over and residents who are registered blind or partial sighted or in receipt of certain benefits. The Help Scheme will explain digital TV clearly and simply, the options available and will install what is needed in the home.

Police and partner agencies are urging residents to be vigilant and check the identity of anyone calling. Residents should note that installers registered with the government help scheme will not call without an appointment and will carry a Help Scheme ID.

Chair of the Safe and Sound group David Kane said: “We would ask residents to look out for possible rogue traders visiting an elderly neighbour or relative who could be vulnerable and check the identification of people calling at the front door.”

If you have any caller claiming to be from the Help Scheme or offering assistance to set up your TV and you haven’t made an appointment then refuse entry to your property and dial 999 and ask for police assistance immediately.

For more information call 0800 408 5900 or visit www.helpscheme.co.uk .

Suffolk Constabulary is reassuring members of the public after a resident contacted officers after receiving a threatening email.

The scam email was received by a Newmarket resident and claimed that a contract had been taken out on his life unless he paid £10,000 to have it cancelled.

The recipient made police aware, and inquiries revealed that this is a known scam email originating from America. There have previously been similar scam emails and, while many people immediately identify them for what they are, there is concern that others may take them seriously and be concerned.

Police are advising people that fraudsters will try anything to get you to part with your cash and this is just one of a number of email scams. If you receive any unsolicited email that asks you for cash then please do not send any.

General advice for dealing with spam email -

· Do not open attachments or click on links in spam email
· Banks, companies, and HM Revenue and Customs will not ask for your username, password or personal details via email
· Email addresses and contents can be fake, even if they appeared to be from a legitimate organisation
· Never reply to spam email or ask to un-subscribe, it only confirms that your email account is active. Most email services provide a "junk or safe list" which if activated can filter spam out of the users inbox
· If it is too good to be true, then its not true.
· Spammers will use current events to legitimise their message, sometimes within hours of the event.
· If you are suspicious of the sender, do not take the risk - always delete spam email

You can also forward on scam emails you receive to the UK’s national fraud reporting centre Action Fraud at email@actionfraud.org.uk, ensuring that personal information, such as your address or bank account details, are not included.

If you believe you might be being set up as a target for fraud or have been a victim of this type of fraud and need advice contact Suffolk Constabulary on 01473 613500.

12 Jun Holbrook and Shotley Medical Practice. Would you like to be part of the new Practice Patient Reference Group?

The Practice wants to gain feedback from its patients by setting up a Patient Reference Group to help us to develop our services in line with our users’ wishes.

We are proposing that the Group should normally communicate by email so that no one is excluded by time or transport constraints. However there would also be some occasions when a face to face meeting is necessary and an evening meeting would be convened.

We hope the Group can be representative of all our users so we welcome interest from registered patients in all age and ethnic groups, all geographical locations in our practice area, and all states of health including those who rarely visit the doctor. We would like there to be a 50:50 split between men and women, someone from every age group including under 25s and those of working age, students, retirees, those who visit us for regular health checks and those who only make an appointment once in a blue moon. There is no real limit on the number of participants but if there is a preponderance of one group we may have to choose members by random selection.

One of the first tasks of the Group will be to agree the questions to be asked in our next Patient Survey. You will also be asked to comment on the outcome and help us to plan our future services.

Could you spare us a few minutes of your time?

If you would like to take part in this Patient Reference Group, please email the practice manager Philippa.Moody@GP-D83020.nhs.uk by 31st July 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Please use the words ‘Patient Reference Group’ in the Subject box.

The Parish Council are broadly in favour of the above actions but have yet to decide on the detail - this will be done at their next meeting in June. If you have a view, please do contact the Parish Clerk

On Landguard Point (OLP) - a new project about HOME.

It explores how in the East of England we construct our diverse notions of home, what home means to each of us, and what it means to host others in our home.

OLP is also a series of extraordinary live large-scale outdoor events and activities, through 2011, engaging thousands of people as participants and audience across the East of England. These events collectively form the content of a new film cycle which will be premiered in 2012.

WE WILL NEED YOUR HELP!

We are writing an Encyclopedia for the East that tells the story of our region - its places, people, histories, myths, folklore, dreams and futures. Ideas, facts and anecdotes ranging from the personal to the poetic are all welcome. Join in and share your experiences and be a part of this project's legacy for the East.

We want to hear about your treasured recipes - the ones that taste of home. We want to make and share a Cookbook for the East. Through sharing the cookbook we hope to communicate far and wide our universally diverse experiences of home and what it means to live here in the East.

A series of small and large-scale live public works on and around Landguard Point in Suffolk
A series of durational flag ceremonies around the coast of East Anglia
A vast compass marked out by hundreds of people at the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket
A region-wide series of Archaeological excavations
OLP is being made by Pacitti Company - specialist makers of live performance.
On Landguard Point is one of 12 Artists taking the lead commissions to celebrate the
London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, funded by Arts Council England.

VOLUNTEERS:

We are looking for a good strong team of volunteers who will form a vital part of the OLP team. From engaging with communities, to attending events and calling out for stories, to helping with administration and evaluation of the project and also stewarding of the outdoor events.

If you are interested PLEASE call Cad 07814235111 or email

Buzabout to be withdrawn in the evenings!

You may already be aware - Buzabout Community Car Services will be withdrawn in the evenings (after 7.00 p.m.) Monday to Saturday and all day Sunday. From the 4th July the service will run from 7.00 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday. From the same date Buzabout will become part of the Suffolk Links Service.

There will therefore be no form of public transport on the Shotley Peninsula during the evenings and on Sundays. The number of passengers has risen since the buses were withdrawn but the decision was probably taken at about the same time.

The revised details can be seen here.

There are petitions at Chelmo, Brantham and East Bergholt Post Offices, Stutton Community Shop and Orwell Stores Chelmo as well as Holbrook and Shotley Post Offices. These will be collected on 2nd June for delivery to Suffolk County Council.

Will the 98 bus be next? I would urge people to use this service as much as possible during the summer despite the disruption caused by the new water main. Lets not allow Suffolk County Council use this as an excuse to terminate this service.

Computer telephone scam

Police are urging all residents to be cautious when dealing with unknown callers after a young couple living in Grundisburgh received several telephone calls from men claiming there was a problem with their computer.

On Friday 6 May the 25-year-old man received a call on their landline number from a man who claimed there were problems with the computer and could he get online immediately. The 25-year-old realised something was amiss as he was already online and had no problems with the machine. During the call several pop ups came up – including one requesting his bank details. The 25-year-old thought the whole thing was strange and ended the call. The next day after logging on several screens came up saying there were viruses on the computer. Yesterday, Tuesday 10 May, the 25-year-old’s partner received a call from a man again saying that the computer problems had to be dealt with urgently. He then tried to talk her through doing various things with the computer and then claimed none of these were working and that he felt sorry for her as it was a really serious problem. He then said that the only way to sort it out would be to buy a key – and became very insistent that she give him her bank details.
She then realised the whole thing was a scam to get her bank information – and told the man this. He then became extremely abusive towards her so she hung up. She then received a number of calls from different men who were abusive towards her. Thankfully at no stage did she give out any bank or card details.

Police are urging anyone receiving such calls never to give out personal information.
Please be extremely careful when dealing with any unknown callers, whether they are on your doorstep or on the phone, and think before responding to unsolicited calls or emails. If anyone attempts to get your bank details in circumstances such as these - hang up. If you suspect there may be a real problem with your computer seek help through a genuine local business or your original supplier.

Message to residents, local businesses and agencies

I am a Consultant in Public Health and have been engaged by the developers of the HMS Ganges site to do an INDEPENDENT rapid health impact assessment of the proposed redevelopment of the old HMS Ganges site.

I am examining the planned development and assessing any likely positive or negative impacts it could have on health locally. We know that health is influenced by issues like income, housing, social cohesion, exercise, road safety, green spaces etc etc and I need to quickly review all these and assess is health might be affected. I would like to invite as many interested local parties and individuals as I can to ask them their views. So if you live or work near the old HMS Ganges site, or you live somewhere nearby that you think might be affected in some way, do please email me.

My specific remit is to examine any possible impact on health. People sometimes that means health services. The availability of health and social care obviously has a health impact. But so many issues 'the social determinants of health' affect health - roads, housing, 'neighbourliness', having someone to talk to, having a better or worse chance of having a job... Really, if any local residents consider the development might have an impact of any kind on well-being, I'd be very interested to hear. Just email me at andybeck_phs@hotmail.com

Many thanks

Parish Council
20 Apr CHELMONDISTON HOUSEHOLD WASTE AND RECYCLING CENTRE

Following on from the Public Meeting at Shotley on the 23rd March 2011........

A meeting was held at the WRG offices on the 28th March between Suffolk CCllr David Wood, the Chairman of Chelmondiston P.C. David Cordle, the Chairman of Shotley P.C. Richard Wrinch and Suffolk County Council (SCC) and the contractors (WRG), with regards contract, license and possibilities of keeping the Chelmondiston Household Waste and Recycling Centre site open in its present form or similar. SCC and WRG were asked for various costings and scenarios to be worked on so that everyone would have a clearer picture of possible ways forward.

A further meeting was held on the 7th April at Chelmondiston to discuss these costings and scenarios.

David Wood reported on the Tuesday 12th April meeting, which he and Kathy Pollard attended that Lisa Chambers and Jane Storey admitted that the amount of pressure placed on them at public meetings, such as ours at Shotley, made them realise that there was a great deal of feeling out there in the public domain against the proposed closures. They have also received petitions containing over 8,000 signatures, which means it will be debated at Council on 26th May. It was also stated that it will give areas such as ours more time to work on alternative solutions (something we have stated as necessary all along).

This is just the start and David thinks we need to keep the pressure on them, as well as working on any viable alternatives. All of the meetings, discussions, letters, emails etc have worked so far, we just have to keep chipping away, so keep sending in the letters and petitions.

David also feels that pressure from parish councils such as Chelmondiston and Shotley with requests for information access to contractors etc has made the process far more open and transparent ...... they had to do something.

So now we have a ‘stay of execution’; closure has been postponed until 31st July 2011.

In the meantime there is to be another meeting on the 26th May to sort out various details, followed possibly, by a Waste Committee meeting.

It is going to be a long drawn out process with hopefully a happy ending. Rest assured David is still doing all he can to keep this facility open.

My thanks go to Suffolk County Councillor David Wood for his work and his help with writing up this report.

Anyone who has any suggestions or ideas regarding community options for operating this site in different ways or who would be interested in being on a Waste Committee should contact:

There are only 3 projects in the final, and the public competition for people to vote for their favourite will be launched on Saturday 9 April. Voting will be for a two week period only.

Clairvoyant evening with Fiona Nicholls, Shotley Village hall, Thursday 12 May. 7.30-9.30pm

Raising money in aid of Teech

A team of 10 volunteers from Customer First, Customer Service Direct (CSD) are joining TEECH from 13th – 28th August 2011 for a Mission to Moldova, the idea being that a group of people raise sponsorship to go to Moldova for 2 weeks (this is 8 days travelling on a coach!) and help out with a project for the community, in this case completely refurbishing a school.

The school, will also serve as a community centre for the village and surrounding areas, at present it has no internal toilets and only limited washing facilities. The kitchen is in a poor state of repair, the plumbing is antiquated and the wiring is dangerous to those that use this. To explain things in more depth as to why Moldova has been chosen, the children in Moldova have absolutely nothing and sadly get swopped for possessions or abandoned altogether. This is one of the most deprived areas within the EU. The idea is to provide the children and the community they live in with a better standard of living.

Full details on the clairvoyant evening can be seen here

Each edition of Community News features the latest information on each SNTs work to tackle local policing priorities as well key contact information. They are available directly from your local SNT or can be viewed here

SNTs work directly with local residents and businesses to establish local policing priorities, making the area a safer and more pleasant place to live.

Each SNT is made up of police officers, police community support officers, special constables and volunteers who work closely with local partners such as district and borough councils to establish swift solutions to crime in your area - which could range from anti-social behaviour to noise and litter.

Community engagement is key to establishing local policing priorities and each SNT holds regular public meetings where local issues and concerns of residents are discussed as future priorities. Officers are also on hand at regular street meets, police surgeries and mobile police station visits.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council have announced their intention to come together and form a new council in April 2013

Primarily driven by a need to cut costs the two councils have already begin a process of "integration." Integration will mean that the two authorities will share a Chief Executive, who will be appointed in the next few months. Following this new heads of service will be appointed, they to will work for both councils. Over the next year the service delivery teams will come together to create a single staffing structure across the two councils, this has already happened for waste collection for example.

"Merger" is the political integration of the two councils. Residents across the two districts will get their opportunity to vote as to whether or not they favour a single authority in a public poll later in 2011. More information on this can be found here

Response to the Parish Clerk from Tim Yeo regarding the closure of Chelmondiston Household Waste Recycling Centre

DICTATED BY TIM YEO MP AND SENT ON HIS BEHALF:

Dear Ms Rowlands

Thank you for contacting me about the closure of Chelmondiston household waste recycling centre. I do appreciate the concern of Shotley Parish Council. However Suffolk County Council is facing some very difficult decisions to cut its spending. These decisions are necessitated solely by the unprecedented public sector financial deficit left behind last year by the Labour Government.

I have received a briefing from Lisa Chambers, the Portfolio Holder for Waste, about this decision which is attached. She adds to this:

“Since the possibility of closures was first announced in December there have been three main areas of concern raised with us:
the possible increase in fly tipping,
the extra miles some people will have to travel to get to a site, and
the possible decrease in recycling.
We have listened to these concerns and have tried to address them as best we can, given the financial constraints we are working under.

Fly tipping is, as you know, both anti-social and illegal and I am sure most Suffolk residents won’t leave rubbish where they shouldn’t. We will, however, work with our partners in the district and borough councils to prosecute anyone who does, and we will make sure the area around closed sites is kept free from rubbish.

We know the closures will mean some people have to travel further, but in deciding which sites to close we have looked at the main areas of population and have been very careful to keep a good spread of sites across the county, with the vast majority of Suffolk residents still able to drive to a site within 20 minutes.

Despite the closures, we remain committed to increasing household recycling to 60% by 2015. We hope Suffolk residents will continue to help us achieve this ambitious target by using their kerbside collections and the hundreds of community recycling banks around the county.

We would like to work with communities to find alternative and innovative ways to reduce, recycle, re-use, recover and compost Suffolk’s waste.”

I hope you find this information useful. I appreciate that you may disagree with Suffolk County Council’s reasoning on this occasion. Nevertheless I fully support the Council in its efforts to tackle the problems caused by the Labour Government’s overspending. The steps it is taking will help to place its finances on a sustainable footing to ensure its future capacity to provide important services across Suffolk.

Yours sincerely

Tim Yeo

Shotley Peninsula - Brand new luxury self catering accommodation at affordable prices

Orwell View Barns opened last summer and provided accommodation for the TV company which made the programme now showing on BBC2 (Tuesday evenings) - A Farmer's Life for Me.

Orwell View Barns is brand new luxury self catering accommodation at affordable prices! Every bedroom has a bathroom, and prices start at only £11.90 per person per night in our largest barn which sleeps up to 6 people based on a 7 night stay.

The key feature of the project has been the conservation, preservation, and renovation of the historic Hill House Farm buildings to holiday units (called Orwell View Barns), and the installation of a biomass wood fuelled boiler for heating them. The wood fuel is sourced from managing our own woodland by coppicing and thinning existing woodland, without compromising the needs of wildlife.

Orwell View Barns has just been short listed for a Creating the Greenest County Award in the category for the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty! The award winners will be announced at a prestigious award ceremony at Wherstead Park at the end of March.

Hazel Wrinch Owner of Orwell View Barns says "We think it is important that we protect our distinctive landscape and rich, diverse wildlife in Suffolk, which exists in a delicate balance. Our high quality environment in the AONB on the Shotley peninsula cannot be taken as "a given" and we must work hard to maintain and enhance these natural assets".

The barn conversions attracted grants from Suffolk & Coast and Heaths under the AONB Sustainable Development Fund and a Department of Energy & Climate Change grant for the biomass boiler/district heating scheme."

Suffolk Police are warning motorists who are driving a vehicle not belonging to them using their own fully comprehensive insurance, they may no longer be covered to do so.

Despite the assumption by many that a fully comprehensive insurance policy would cover drivers to use another persons vehicle with their permission, there has recently been a change in a lot of insurance policies and this often no longer comes as standard.

One issue that officers specifically want motorists to check is in relation to driving another person’s vehicle with the owner’s permission when the vehicle does not have an insurance policy in place. With recent changes the majority of insurers now stipulate that the vehicle being driven must at least have third party cover.

If a person is stopped in a vehicle that is not their own and are unsure if their policy covers them to drive another vehicle, officers will have to complete a check. If it is discovered that the driver is not correctly covered it could result in a fixed penalty notice fine of £200 and 6 penalty points or a day at Magistrates Court. The vehicle will also be seized.

Inspector Julian Ditcham of the Roads Policing Unit said: “Stopping vehicles and checking insurance policies will take up the time of the members of public and of our officers. This information will appear either on the front of your certificate or in the small print, so it is the driver’s responsibility to make sure they are covered.

“We do realise that there is a lack of awareness of this policy change so this is a polite reminder to all motorists to have a double check. However, we are also aware that there will be people out there who are deliberately offending and therefore appropriate action will be used wherever necessary.”

Results of Thursday’s Suffolk County Council meeting

Chelmo tip will close from 9th May, Portman Road is not closing and will be our ‘nearest’ site!

Shotley will lose the School Crossing patrol that took us years to get in the first place.

No buses after 6.30pm in or out and no Sunday service at all, tough if you don’t drive, if you want to meet friends and go out, and/or have a job that requires you to work evenings and weekends.

However, there are glimmers of hope……

Firstly, PLEASE sign the online petition (link below) for Chelmo tip, 3657 signatures are needed, (and it’s only just over halfway there) when this point is reached, Suffolk MUST hold a review of their decision...

http://petitions.web-labs.co.uk/suffolkcc/public/Petition-concerning-the-proposal-by-Suffolk-County-Council-to-close-7-household-waste-sites

County Councillor Dave Woods came to the Parish Council meeting on Thursday straight from the SCC meeting to report back and has told us the following...

Crossing Patrol; there are ways of funding and running this service that will be available to the community, should the local willpower be there to continue this hard won service.

Buses; County Councillor Dave Woods is starting discussions with the bus companies to see what can be salvaged, rearranged or started afresh.

Chelmo tip; definitely the most complicated; certain legal points have to be checked before any of the parishes can begin to form an action plan, but signing the ONLINE petition is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do RIGHT NOW.

Suffolk County council have provided a source of information to assist council's in dealing with enquiries from residents regarding the changes to public transport from April 2011.

Passenger Transport has drawn together all of the information relating to bus service changes, both sponsored and commercial and published them at one location on the suffolkonboard website. The list provided includes every bus service that operates within Suffolk and its status. Whilst the web page cannot at this stage advise on timetable details it will at least inform on the nature of any changes that can be expected.
The information is available at this link - Changes to Public Transport Services - April 2011
As information is received through the registration of timetables the next level of detail will be published in the timetable section of the web site www.suffolkonboard.com
The information relating to sponsored services includes actions to be taken in order to meet the revised budget for 2011/12 and we do not anticipate any further major service reductions or withdrawals other than those required to meet changes in the commercial market.

Local resident writes in with his views on the County Councils decision to remove all School Crossing Patrols

If the Council remove the lollypop lady and, as seems apparent, parents and other volunteers can't take over for obscure beaurocratic reasons, thus making a nonsense of the Big Society of which this is a prime example for local volunteering, and if there is real concern amongst the parents for the safety of their children, then the Council should request the Highways Agency to remove all current road markings and double yellow line both sides of the road from, and including the dangerous bend from Shotley Gate, on both sides of the road from the bend up to Orwell Drive. Yes, people may still park on these lines. Yes, the local police patrol, carefully timing their visit, may only be able to catch them occasionally, but the school itself could name and shame those who persist and also combine with the police for effective policing.
Also add a zebra crossing at a safe point below Orwell Drive with clear visibility in both directions for those who live on the side opposite from the school.
Of course it will not be popular with the parents. But it will be 10 times more popular with Shotley Gate drivers trying to get to work from 8.30 to 9.00 not having to queue and navigate the cars parked on the left hand side, doors flying open, people getting stuff out of the back and the boot of their car.
Nobody in a position of authority is in it to be popular. If things obviously need doing, then it is their resposibility to do them or get them done. So let's go to it.
Richar Rossiter

BIKESAFE – Workshops for skills that could save lives

Suffolk Police are giving motorcyclists across the county an opportunity to improve their skills and become better and safer riders by attending a motorcycle course.

In conjunction with Suffolk County Council, Suffolk Police is running a series of ‘Bikesafe’ motorcycle workshops in a bid to decrease the number of motorcyclists being killed or seriously injured in the county.

Bikesafe is a nationally recognised police-run biking initiative focusing on education, and aims to improve rider awareness and rider ability. In 2008 it won the prestigious Motorcycle Industry sponsored Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for achievement and innovation.

The workshop includes classroom sessions covering topics such as positioning and cornering, plus an escorted ride-out session with a police motorcyclist who will offer an accurate and personalised assessment of the rider’s performance. Furthermore, the Saturday afternoon session will include a first aid session, focusing on injuries that could be obtained from coming off a motorcycle.

Chief Inspector Ady Dawson said: “This is an excellent opportunity to improve your riding skills. Hopefully through education rather than enforcement we can work with the motorcycling community to bring down the number of deaths on our roads.”

The workshops are held at Police Headquarters at Martlesham Heath, Ipswich, and are on the following dates in 2011:

18 - 19 March
8 - 9 April
27 - 28 May
10 - 11 June
15 - 16 July
19 - 20 August
23 - 24 September

Bikesafe is suitable for all qualified riders regardless of biking experience. The course is aimed at those wishing to add to the skills they have already acquired and improve their level of riding and general road craft.

The workshops cost £55 per person. For further information on Bikesafe workshops, call Hayley Batterham or Pc Kevin Stark on 01473 613730 or email bikesafe@suffolk.pnn.police.uk. Alternatively details about the course can be found at www.suffolk.police.uk

One of our readers writes in, in response to the possible closure of Chelmondiston Household Waste and recycling centre

Hi

Perhaps the following will help to clarify the proposed closure of The Chelmondiston recycle centre............

I received the following information from Mark Deer of the Waste Services Management at S.C.C. concerning the possible closure of the Chelmondiston Recycle centre.

Mr Deer is keen to hear from members of the public who wish to voice an opinion on the matter. SEE CONTACT BELOW.

People wishing to object to any possible closure should ALSO contact the elected members of Suffolk County Council who will be voting on this issue before 17 February.

Please note time is very short for opinions to be voiced before a decision is made.

Proposed closure of household waste recycling centres and reduced opening hours

Suffolk County Council is facing its worst financial situation ever and needs to find savings of over £40 million by April 2012. Every area of the council’s work will be affected.
One proposal is to close seven out of the county’s 18 household waste recycling centres and reduce opening hours on the sites which remain open.
We remain committed to reducing, reusing and recycling as much waste as possible. We are proud that Suffolk is one of the top recycling counties in the country, with over half our waste recycled. We aim to get that up to 60% by 2015.

Key dates

No decisions will be taken until the full council meets on 17 February 2011.
Any agreed changes won’t come into effect until after 1 April 2011.

Sites to close

It is up to full council on 17 February 2011 to decide if any sites should close. In the meantime we are considering which ones could close. We are looking at factors such as the number of people using each site, recycling rates, the cost of running each one and the spread of sites across the county.

Proposed new opening times

To come into effect on 1 April 2011, if councillors agree to reduce opening hours.

Summer (April to September) 9am until 5pm – Monday to Saturday
Winter (October to March) 9am until 4pm – Monday to Saturday
All year round 10am until 4pm - Sundays and bank holidays, the sites will close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, as usual..

Allowing businesses to use the sites

The county council is also considering allowing businesses to use some sites for a charge. This will give them more options for disposing of their waste. It will also help to encourage more recycling of business waste - this currently stands at 25% as opposed to over 50% for household waste.

20 Jan Shotley Peninsula Cycling Campaign

Last year saw the launch of the Shotley Peninsula Cycling Campaign (SPCC), which now has over 100 members. Our aim is to encourage more people to cycle safely on and around the peninsula. Our specific objective is to create a new, largely traffic free, community path (suitable for cyclists, pedestrians and wheel-chair users), from Ipswich down to Shotley Gate, along the B1456 corridor – an ambitious but exciting project. We also hope to create links across the peninsula to Holbrook, particularly to the High School, and Alton Water.

The SPCC has commissioned a feasibility study into this proposed path; work on the study has already started, and should be completed in April. It will propose a draft route and look at likely demand, likely costs, and the phasing, of the different stages of the project. We are aiming to present this at a Public Meeting on Wednesday May 4th 2011 (7.00pm) at Shotley Village Hall. A question and answer session will follow; we also hope to be publicly launching our web site. Non-members, as well as members, are welcome.

On Sunday 10th April 2011 from 10.30am to 12.00noon, we are holding a Fun Cycle Ride for children of eleven years and under, in the grounds of Woolverstone Hall, courtesy of Ipswich High School for Girls. All children need to bring their own bikes and safety helmet, must be accompanied by an adult, and need to arrive by 10.15 to register in order to take part. Light refreshments will be available.

You can join our campaign (just £5.00 annual subscription per household) at the Fun Ride, or Public Meeting, or contact our Treasurer, Jane Goyder, for an application form (Tel.01473 328314, or contact via email )

Chelmondiston Household Waste and recycling centre - possible closure!!!

One of our readers has sent us an e mail expressing her concern at the possible closure of the Chelmondiston Household Waste and recycling centre......

"After visiting the Chelmo Tip today I learnt that it could be closing unless it can be proved, very quickly that there is significant support for it. Apparently the staff were told just before Christmas and they find out next week whether or not it is still going to stay open. There are 7 sites going to be closed and ours has been picked as a possibility.

Not only that the Portman Road sale is going through which means the nearest tip for us is Foxhall which is going to mean about a 30 mile round trip just to do the right thing and recycle."

Show your support for the centre by e mailing your concerns to Babergh District Council hwrc@et.suffolkcc.gov.uk
